Shoulder Replacement

Total shoulder replacement is a surgical procedure where the worn-out surfaces of the shoulder are resurfaced with metal and plastic components. Over time, the cartilage that cushions the bones can wear away and cause stiffness, pain and discomfort.

This affects your ability to perform basic activities of daily living. Shoulder replacement can reduce or eliminate pain, improve strength and range of motion, and get you back to a normal life.

Shoulder Replacement

Who is a candidate?

Shoulder replacement surgery may be considered for those suffering from arthritic shoulder pain that severely limits activities of daily living. Surgery is only recommended after careful examination and diagnosis of your particular joint problem and only after more conservative measures has proven ineffective.

What kind of shoulder implant is best?

There are many shoulder implants available, and no one design or type is best for every patient. Each surgeon selects the implant he or she believes is best for each patient based on a number of factors, including age and activity level. If you have specific questions regarding implants, your surgeon will be happy to answer them.

How long will I be at Alvarado Hospital?

With improvements in surgical techniques and postoperative care, it is common for many patients to be discharged after two or three days. Each patient is different, but the goal is for you to recover in the comfort and privacy of your own home as soon as possible.

How long is the recovery period?

This can vary from person to person, but most people will need to use a sling for four to six weeks. Driving may be possible within six weeks, when full shoulder movement is regained. Usually there are lifting restrictions for six months. Most people will be able to go straight home from the hospital, though some patients, particularly those living alone, may need to spend a few days at a rehabilitation center or nursing home.
